World Day for Safety and Health at Work: Prevent Today to Protect Tomorrow
Every April 28, the World Day for Safety and Health at Work is observed, as it is a date that invites to reflect on the importance of promoting safe, healthy, and sustainable working environments. In an increasingly dynamic and demanding business environment, proper management of occupational risks not only ensures regulatory compliance but also serves as a key element in protecting the life, health, and well-being of employees.
Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) must not be understood as an isolated or merely administrative obligation. On the contrary, it represents a comprehensive management approach aimed at identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing effective controls to prevent workplace accidents and occupational illnesses. Prevention is most effective when it is integrated across the company’s processes, decisions, and culture.
In accordance with current OSH regulations, employers are responsible for ensuring safe working conditions, implementing appropriate preventive measures, and promoting continuous improvement of their Occupational Safety and Health Management System (OSHMS). This commitment involves not only complying with legal requirements but also anticipating risks, particularly in changing environments such as the adoption of new technologies, modification to production processes, or the implementation of alternative work modalities.
Within this framework, the role of senior management is essential. Visible leadership, the allocation of adequate resources, and a clear definition of responsibilities enable the consolidation of effective preventive management. Likewise, the active participation of employees through the OSH Committee or the OSH Supervisor strengthens the identification of actual risks and supports the development of a culture of prevention based on shared responsibility.
Commemorating the World Day for Safety and Health at Work also involves recognizing that prevention creates value. Effective OSH management helps reduce workplace incidents, minimize the costs associated with accidents and illnesses, improve the organizational climate, and strengthen the company’s reputation with clients, suppliers and authorities. In that sense, prevention should not be viewed as an expense, but as a strategic investment.
This date therefore represents an opportunity for companies to review the status of their OSHMS, assess their level of compliance, and reinforce the actions aimed at protecting their most important asset: their people. OSH not only saves lives, but also directly contributes to business sustainability and competitiveness.
